April
Fitness testing...hockey...European Handball...games...that's on the menu this month. In the fall, some classes did not have the opportunity to complete their hockey unit, so hockey was on the menu for 1 week in April. This was a week of reviewing safety, proper fundamentals, and a round-robin style tournament. We were glad to have such a patient group...this is probably one of our most popular units during the school year and for the classes who had to wait...well it was hard. European Handball is very popular, well uh in Europe. Sweden and Norway dominated this event in the last Olympics and it's very popular with the students here at Kinnikinnick. Just think soccer, but instead of kicking the ball, it is passed from player-to-player until near the goal box. Once there the ball is thrown into the goal instead of kicked. It's a great workout and super for our cooler temps in April. March During the month of March the students at Kinnikinnick are having instructors from our local Kids Spot to enhance their tumbling skills. I taught tumbling for 30 years on my own, but I came to the decision to request help from our local experts. The move has proved to be phenomenal. We are now lucky enough to have more highly skilled instructors who have received national recognition for their teaching prowess. Through the cooperation of Kid's Spot owners Theresa Maloney and Susan Johnson, we have no fewer than 4 instructors working with our students. Progress has been accelerated and confidence has grown exponentially. Kids Spot is located at 9461 North Second St on the frontage road just south of Culvers. Further information about Kids Spot can be found at www.kidsspotinc.com and summer camps begin in Kids Spot is a great alternative to day care, as loads of after school gymnastics, tumbling, dance and cheerleading programs/camps are available. They also provide special "Kids Night" out and birthday parties. Check them out. We're glad we did. Just ask your kids! February Students have started working on jumping rope using the long jump ropes. We are slowly getting ready for our Jump Rope for Heart Event...a fundraiser for the American Heart Association. We have donated over $ 200,000 over the years to this worthy cause. This year's Jump Rope for Heart event will be in Kinnikinnick's gymnasium on February 23 from 2:45 to 4:15. We encourage students to participate in this program because it raises monies to fight heart disease, our nation's # 1 killer. It is a fun, healthy, active unit and program benefiting our kids health, our community and the American Heart Association. Students who choose to get pledges for the American Heart Association are awarded prizes and the school benefits by getting physical education equipment for our school. Please go to the "links" page found on the HOME PAGE to get more information from the American Heart Association' Jump Rope for Heart Program and sign up to participate! We encourage the students to sign-up online because they have the opportunity to earn more participation prizes and it's much simpler to contact potential donors. ALL MONEY DONATIONS ARE DUE 3 WEEKS AFTER THE EVENT! CHECKS MADE OUT TO AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION. December Safety, Pump use, Dribble, Set-shot, Lay-up, Chest Pass, Bounce Pass, Offense, Defense...looks like basketball has arrived at Kinnikinnick. September In September we administer physical fitness tests to all the students in our building. The list of the tests is below along with a definition of terms. Each year in the last report card of the year, a progress report on your child's fitness will be included in their final report card. Physical Fitness Evaluation At Kinnikinnick School we use several standardized fitness instruments to evaluate your child's current physical health. These tests are screening tests and should not be thought of as diagnostic tests. We encourage you to watch for long term trends in evaluating your child's overall well-being and if you have concerns, seek advice from your family physician. If you have any questions about the fitness tests we administer to your child, you may contact us. We have also started a games unit, while Mr. Nosbisch has started a health related fitness unit. In our games unit we've played "Pirates", "Drip, Drip Drench" (you'll see this game in May during our Field Day), used the parachute and also played "Earthball Soccer". Enjoy the photos... Mr. Anderson and Mr. Nosbisch August - It's HOT, HOT, HOT Welcome back students! It is my 36th year of teaching in the Kinnikinnick School district and I am looking forward to seeing all of my 4th grade students from last year as 5th graders and welcome all incoming 4th graders. We will be beginning the month with very hot temperatures, so I want to remind all of you to wear light colored clothing, hydrate (drink plenty of water, not soda...most of it has caffeine and lots of sugar in it), and use sunscreen to protect yourself from the sunlight. While it is super to be outside, the sun's rays can be very rough on your body, so be aware of these precautions listed above. After an introduction to the facilities, reviewing fire safety/evacuation and tornado drills, Mr. Nosbisch and I will start the year playing some of the student's favorite games from previous years. After a week or so of games, we will be involved with our bus evacuation drill and safety video. Tennis Shoes We would like to remind students to wear tennis shoes each day for physical education and also to remind parents that if students are excused from activity, they will still be attending class to observe what other students are doing. Students who do not participate in physical education because of illness or injury will not be allowed to go outdoors for recess. Please be aware that at Kinnikinnick School, students do have physical education 5 days per week for 1/2 hour per day. Please help us out by encouraging your child to be active outside of school so week can meet our personal goal of having our students be active for an additional 1/2 hour outside of school. While we do have a lunch recess, the additional time may not fulfill the full hour of play everyday as recommended by most fitness experts. Welcome to Kinnikinnick! We are glad you are here!
